Foreshore feedback wanted

Public feedback on a master plan for Portarlington’s Ramblers Road foreshore is being sought by the City of Greater Geelong.

Council said the new master plan would replace the Ramblers Road Foreshore Management Plan 2007, which helped to address key issues and coordinate improvement works in the area.

“Ramblers Road foreshore is a unique and dynamic coastal environment of sand dunes, native vegetation, and lagoons,” mayor Trent Sullivan said.

“The foreshore is so important for biodiversity and conservation, as well as a place where people enjoy swimming, fishing, and being out in nature.

“The feedback provided by community members will help us understand what people value about the area, any issues that need addressing, and will help us to prioritise investment.”

The new master plan wouldl reflect changes since 2007 including;

The installation of a gravel pathway

An increasing population and usage of the foreshore

Increasing threats from climate change

Installation of the award-winning Ramblers Road Artificial Reef’

Upgrades to Point Richards Boat Harbour

Sightings of orange-bellied parrot

Nesting red-capped plovers

Formation of the Friends of Ramblers Road Group in 2021.

The master plan will review weed control, seasonal accumulation of seagrass wrack, and other management actions to protect and enhance the foreshore, Council said.

Bellarine ward Councillor Stephanie Asher said the master plan would consider key issues such as coastal hazard and climate change management, as well as protection and enhancement of environmental values.

“We’re lucky to have such a beautiful environment right on our doorstep so we want to work with the community to protect and enhance it,” she said.

Engagement sessions will be held at:

Portarlington Information Booth Centre: noon to 2pm Saturday January 7

Online open house: 5pm Thursday January 12

Friends of Ramblers Road at the Portarlington Sailing Club, Point Richards Road: 9am to 11am Sunday January 15

Online open house: 5pm Tuesday February 7.

Community engagement closes at 5pm 10 February 2023. For more information visit yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au/RRF
