Visitors to the CBD recently will have noticed the return of the school Christmas trees in Johnstone Park.

Last week the 31 trees, which were each decorated by primary school students across the Geelong region, where put on display at the Johnstone Park forecourt and Little Malop Central.

Greater Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said it was great to see the trees decorating Central Geelong.

“It’s fantastic that our local students get so involved during this exciting time of the year and they do an outstanding job decorating their trees,” she said.

“Each tree has its own special design and character and is a demonstration of the creativity and artistic talent of the young people in our region.”

Cr Asher said it was a great way for the students to end what had been a very disrupted school year, due to lockdowns and the ongoing impacts of the pandemic.

“Children across our region have had a disruptive and challenging year with intermittent lockdowns separating them from their friends and having to adapt to remote learning,” she said.

“It’s fantastic that the kids could come together to work on these special Christmas trees that represent their schools.”

Cr Asher said she hoped families from across the Greater Geelong region would visit and enjoy the school Christmas trees and take advantage of all the Christmas attractions on offer across the region.

“With two-hour parking free in 2P zones in Central Geelong throughout December, we hope families will come in to see school Christmas Trees, the famous floating Christmas tree, and snap a photo on our giant selfie trail,” she said.
