Superboats make a splash in Geelong

Great weather and light winds graced boats as round two of the 2024 Offshore Superboat Championship made a splash in Geelong.

The two-day event featured competitive races, including open and enclosed cockpits, held in Corio Bay from March 16 to 17, with people watching on from Steampacket Gardens.

Australian Offshore Powerboat Club commodore Antony de Fina said the weekend boasted “great, close and eventful racing” and many great boats.

“It was a fantastic weekend, with beautiful weather, at this glorious venue, with great competition, and terrific people both out on the water and ashore,” he said.

“The crews were pushing hard, some of them a bit too hard, and some even went for a little swim, but everything worked well in terms of safety procedures and there were no injuries.”

Nut Case, manned by Hary Bakkr and Shane Paton, took home two wins in Saturday’s Supersports 65 races but saw Mark and Liam Sutherland’s Gigglin’ Racing secure gold during the Sunday race.

Mr de Fina and Matt Kelly’s The Mantis won the Supercat Outboard race on Saturday and Sunday’s first race, with Mike Ratcliffe and Karl Wall’s The Sting winning the day’s second race.

Supersports 85 was secured by Jason and Mick Kelly in The Colonel on Saturday and Ryan Shan and Scott Kelly’s RS Motorsport on Sunday.

The next two rounds will be held in Queensland, with round three at Hervey Bay from May 11 to 12 and round four on the Gold Coast from July 27 to 28.
