Safety upgrades come to Fischer Street

Road closures are currently underway in Torquay as upgrade works progress to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Raised priority crossings and dedicated cycling lanes will be installed at key intersections along Fischer Street, with the street closed to southbound traffic between Aquilla Avenue and Cowrie Street.

Placemaking and Environment general manager Chris Pike said traffic would be diverted through the Esplanade, but that Fischer Street would remain open for northbound traffic throughout the project.

“It’s an important piece of work given the history of accidents along Fischer Street, including several involving cyclists,” he said.

“We understand roadworks are inconvenient and appreciate the community’s patience while these upgrades take place.

“While there is some short-term impact to people as they drive around town, the long-term safety benefits for all road users will be significant.”

There will also be localised traffic diversions associated with works at the Fischer Street/Darian Road intersection and the Fischer Street/Beach Road intersection.

The closure will remain in place until the work is completed, which is expected before Christmas, with residents continuing to have access to their homes.

Works will include providing raised priority crossings for pedestrians and cyclists on all four sides of the Darian Road roundabout and on the eastern side of the Beach Road roundabout.

The upgrades would also include construction of an off-road bike lane on the south-bound side and marking a 1.5-metre on-road cycle lane on the north-bound side of Parkside Crescent to Highlander Street.
