Surf Coast residents are moving to Geelong in a reversal of the sea change phenomenon, according to new government statistics.

But the Department of Planning and Community Development figures show Geelong is losing residents to neighbouring Golden Plains Shire as city dwellers opt for tree changes instead.

Rotten apples, rock-hard rice and other meals that “look like excrement” are on the menu at Barwon Health’s McKellar Centre, according to patients.

They have accused the centre of leaving pre-cooked meals in warmers for two days before serving them to rehabilitation patients and elderly-care residents at the North Geelong facility.

At least $280 million in tourism revenue has been lost in Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula since the COVID-19 pandemic hit Victoria.

In just four months, more than a quarter of the region’s annual $1.1 billion tourism dollars has been wiped out, according to Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine executive director Brett Ince.

Geelong council and industry leaders have reacted with shock and disappointment after Premier Daniel Andrews’ announcement this week that the 2026 Commonwealth Games would no longer go ahead.

Citing a cost blowout from the budgeted $2.6 billion to possibly over $7 billion, the premier cancelled the Games, which was to be held in Geelong and three other regional hubs.
