Kicking goals towards inclusivity

A disability support organisation will continue making community sports across the Barwon region more inclusive, welcoming and resilient thanks to state government funding.

Leisure Networks secured $610,000 through the Together More Active program to continue its role in strengthening inclusivity through sport.

Chief executive David Meade said the funding will help Leisure Networks support more clubs and sports to be more “sustainable, accessible and inclusive”.

“It is a validation of the work we have done over many years and the work we will support into the future,” he said.

“We know community sport had the potential to improve and change lives as well as to improve and change communities.

“We know that many people continue to drop out of sport, often this is because they don’t feel safe, respected or included. These outcomes flow through negatively to mental and physical health.”

The funding will allow Leisure Networks to support clubs and sporting communities over the next two years in increasing equity, inclusion and diversity across the region.

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens said the funding would help the organisation continue creating space where people could feel welcome and connected through sport.

“This funding will enable the Leisure Networks team to expand and continue supporting and enhancing participation in sports and active recreation,” she said.

“Geelong is fortunate to have such a passionate and committed organisation like Leisure Networks, which offers support and opportunities for all participants.”
