Family-friendly park in Geelong is getting renewed

Residents can have their say on the renewal plans of a valued and historic play space in the centre of Geelong West.

Greater Geelong council decided to renew Sparrow Park and replace the current playground equipment on site with new equipment and trees planted for shade.

Mayor Trent Sullivan said he looked forward to the renewal of Sparrow Park and encouraged residents to share their views on the proposed plans.

“The intended Sparrow Park renewal is an important step in providing for the recreational needs of families in the community,” he said.

“Responding to the survey questions will help the city to understand community views on the proposed playground renewal plans.”

Council said it intended for Sparrow Park to remain a district playground that provided a range of play opportunities and amenities that catered to all abilities and ages.

Councillor and chair of the leisure and recreation portfolio, Peter Murrihy, urged residents to complete the short survey and have their say on the proposed plans.

“The intended Sparrow Park renewal is an important step in providing for the recreational needs of families in the community,” he said.

“We understand the importance of providing play spaces that are easily accessible to residents and including equipment that is both entertaining and testing while maintaining high and safe Australian standards.

“I urge residents to have their say on the Sparrow Park renewal and redesign, and help the city understand how it can best meet the needs of community members in Geelong West.”

Council will provide the local community with the opportunity for face-to-face engagement on Wednesday, March 22, at 8am, and Sunday, March 26, at 9am, at Sparrow Park.

On-site signage outlining the proposed plans is also available, and people can contribute their thoughts on the proposal to yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au/SparrowPark by Sunday, March 26.
