Greater Geelong and Barwon Coast have come together to provide clarity and transparency on the region’s natural assets through a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

City of Greater Geelong council and Barwon Coast Committee of Management members signed the MOU early this month to formalise shared land management responsibilities along the coastal foreshore.

The MOU follows Barwon Coast’s Coastal and Marine Management Plan objective to strengthen partnerships with agencies, Traditional Owners and the community.

“This MOU is a great example of what can be achieved when organisations work collaboratively with a shared vision,” chair Sandra Gatehouse said.

“This agreement not only clarifies current responsibilities but also opens the door to future opportunities where we can work together to improve environmental outcomes and community services,” chief executive Gareth Smith said.

The MOU also aligns with City of Greater Geelong council’s strategic goals for integrated coastal management and commitment to protecting and enhancing the natural environment.

“This MOU is a significant step forward in ensuring our community benefits from clear, coordinated management of our precious coastal areas,” chief executive Ali Wastie said.

“This agreement strengthens our ability to protect and enhance it through collaboration, shared knowledge, and a united approach to land management,” councillor Elise Wilkinson said.

The MOU outlines which entity is responsible for maintaining specific assets and delivering services, which will be reviewed annually, with the organisations working together over two years to develop the agreement.
