Graduating VCE student Joy Im knows exactly where she wants her career to take her.
Joy was named dux of Geelong Lutheran College (GLC) this week, receiving an ATAR of 99.65.
She earned six study scores over 40, including a perfect 50 for History: Revolutions, 46 in Literature, 45 in Global Politics, 43 in German, 42 in General Mathematics and 41 in English.
“I was with my whole family around the dining table when I went to the website, and when I saw my ATAR I was pretty pleased and quite surprised,” Joy said.
“I was aiming for high 90s, but I didn’t have a specific number, because I didn’t really want to be disappointed.”
Joy has already been accepted into the Navy’s officer training course for next year, after which she will undertake a Bachelor of Arts in International and Political Studies, majoring in Indo-Pacific Studies.
“After that, I’ll be commissioned as a Navy intelligence officer,” she said.
“I really love staying active and fit, but I also wanted to have a career where you can be a leader as well as actively making a change and contributing to something.
“And I’m interested in geopolitics and international relations, so it’s a really good avenue for me.”
Joy thanked her family for their unwavering support and GLC for providing a positive learning environment.
“From the start it’s been a community-minded school,” she said.
“The teacher-student relationship is really, really good…they’re your mentors in a way. The passion my teachers brought to each class was amazing.”
