Positive ageing across Surf Coast

Surf Coast Shire is preparing to celebrate positive ageing with many activities and opportunities available for the community next month.

Positive Ageing Month will be held by Surf Coast Shire Council in October, which supports the Victorian Seniors Festival and its theme of ‘Connect, Create, Celebrate’.

Positive Ageing Advisory Committee councillor representative Tony Phelps said there would be more than 30 events and activities available for the community.

“It’s about connecting with others, having fun and discovering what some of our many wonderful community organisations can offer year-round,” he said.

“Our annual celebration of people aged 55 and older just keeps getting bigger and better with the diverse and engaging range of activities on offer across the shire.

“We love to see people being active, involved and making connections at any time but this month serves up some really special opportunities for trying something new or revitalising an interest, skill or hobby.”

Some activities during the month link with other dedicated events across the country, including Ageism Awareness Day (October 9), National Carers Week (October 12-18) and Get Online Week (October 20-26).

The state government will also support the Victorian Seniors Festival by providing eight days of free public transport for Victorian Seniors Card holders between October 5 and 12 to help people attend events.

People can access the full Positive Ageing Month calendar at surfcoast.vic.gov.au/PositiveAgeingMonth or collect printed copies from local community houses or the council’s Torquay civic office.
