Car-truck crash leaves 71-year-old critical

A 71-year-old man is fighting for life at Royal Melbourne Hospital after a car-truck crash at Mt Moriac on Monday.

The elderly driver was attempting to turn from Cape Otway Rd onto Mt Duneed Rd about 10.15am, Geelong Highway Patrol Senior Constable Matt Goonan said.

But he failed to give way to a truck travelling from the opposite direction on Cape Otway Rd, Sen Const Goonan said.

“For some reason he hasn’t seen the oncoming truck.”

The southbound truck struck the elderly man’s car, caving in the front passenger side, Sen Const Goonan said.

“If he had a passenger it would have been a fatality,” he said.

The man from Irrewarra, near Colac, from sustained severe head, arm and pelvis injuries in the crash and an ambulance helicopter flew him to Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The man remained in a critical condition on Monday afternoon, a hospital spokesperson said.

The truck driver, a 60-year-old Torquay man, was uninjured.

Police continued their investigation on Monday and urged anyone with information or who witnessed the collision to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
