Geelong’s chances of winning a new airline’s jobs-rich headquarters and call centre improved dramatically yesterday when the company told The Independent it was “leaning” to Avalon.

Spirit Airlines spokesperson Christine Coliyer said Avalon was now the company’s favoured base for its east coast operations and 350 jobs.

Unauthorised construction of a harbour at Leopold is just the tip of the iceberg on the Bellarine Peninsula, according to Port Phillip Conservation Council.

The council claims land-owners have illegally built marinas, jetties, gazebos, land extensions, pipelines and boat ramps along the northern side of the peninsula.

Liberal Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay cited rising crime rates and illegal drugs as he slammed Bellarine MP Lisa Neville and Police Minister Wade Noonan for failing to expand the opening hours by March as promised.
