Windows to diversity

A public display of diversity is being showcased on Geelong’s Yarra Street.

Windows of the World is a joint collaboration between Cultura and the City of Greater Geelong that shows the traditions and creativity of 12 local community groups at this time of year.

Each festive installation in the Yarra Street window gallery captures a different festival, performance, costume or event, reflecting Geelong’s growing multicultural population and fostering pride and understanding.

The participating community groups and window themes are: Chinese Association Geelong (Chinese New Year); Geelong Afghan Community (Eid al-Fitr); Punjabi SWAG (Teeyan); Geelong Scottish Dance (Highland Games); Russian Orthodox Community (New Year celebration); Geelong Latin American Movement (Velitas y Farolitos); Greek Community of Geelong (Panayiri); Japanese Association of Geelong (Oshogatsu); Nigerian Association Geelong (Ojude Oba); Filipino Australian Friendship Association Geelong (Pasko); Brazilian Association of Greater Geelong (Carnaval); and Serbian Parish Youth Club (Božic).

Cultura chief executive Rebecca Smith said Windows of the World highlighted 12 of the 49 community groups it supports in the region.

“Like Pako Festa and our other community-led programs, this exhibition helps the wider community learn about the heritage, traditions and customs of cultures from around the world who now call Geelong home,” she said.

“We are thankful to those multicultural communities who contributed to this wonderful initiative and proud that we can help bring this project to life, together with our friends at the City of Greater Geelong.”

The display is on show until 7 January.
