Council compost giveaway

Members of the public can try out premium compost for free this month.

Free samples of the City’s Better for Geelong compost will be available at participating community gardens around the municipality on Saturday 25 October from 9am to noon.

Made locally from recycled green bin waste at the City’s Anakie Organics processing facility, the compost has been used across Greater Geelong in council-owned gardens for the last few years.

While loose compost has previously been available for sale by weight, the giveaway will promote the launch of bagged units of the product.

Community members can pick up samples of the compost from a range of sites across the Geelong, including Lara Community Garden, Grovedale Community Garden, Chilwell Community Garden and Murnong Community Garden.

Geelong deputy mayor Ron Nelson encouraged residents to try the homegrown compost.

“This has been a real success story of the circular economy in action,” he said.

“We’re proud of the City’s efforts to turn the community’s green bin contents into a quality product for locals to use.”

Environment and Circular Economy portfolio chair councillor Elise Wilkinson said the compost was beneficial to the community.

“Every time you use your green bin correctly, you’re not only helping to create this compost, but you’re also reducing landfill, cutting emissions and supporting local jobs,” Cr Wilkinson said.

“It’s a simple action with a big impact.”
