CMA seeks feedback on Barwon River management plan

Community members can help shape the way the banks of the Barwon River are managed, protected and used into the future.

Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has asked the public to provide feedback on a draft Recreational Area Management Plan (RAMP) for the Barwon River through Geelong.

As the waterway manager for the sections of the Barwon within Geelong, the Corangamite CMA is responsible for a 20km stretch of the river between Orana Road, Highton and the Lower Breakwater.

The RAMP aims to protect and maintain the water quality of the waterways, conserve flora, fauna and habitats, promote health and safety as well as recreation, protect heritage features and ensure the area is managed in a way that respects the rights of Traditional Owners.

Corangamite CMA senior project officer Silvana Iannello welcomed community feedback on the plan, which is now available to view online.

“The Recreational Area Management Plan defines permitted activities, ensures water quality and environmental protection, protects cultural heritage values, protects facilities, and promotes public safety along the land-based area of the waterway,” she said.

“We welcome community feedback on how this land can be managed into the future.”

In addition to the online survey, Corangamite CMA will host a drop-in session on October 15 in Geelong where community members can chat to staff about the plan.
