‘Suspicious’ death of Geelong man

Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death of a man in Geelong after his body was discovered outside his home on Friday morning.

The man’s body was found by his wife outside their Western Beach Road home address and next to his vehicle near Malone Street around 4am on Friday, September 15.

Homicide Squad Detective Sergeant Tony Hupfeld said the man’s wife alerted police to his death and that he was found with significant head injuries, which was being treated by police as suspicious.

“It’s only very early in the investigation and we’re still to determine the circumstances of his death, however we are treating it as suspicious,” he said.

“What we do know is that a 40-year-old Geelong man left his home address on Western Beach Road at approximately 10pm last night (Thursday, September 14), which was his usual practice.

“His wife became concerned when she awoke around 4am to find that he was not home, she’s gone outside the address and found him deceased.”

Detective Sergeant Hupfeld said the man was known to walk his dog regularly between 10pm and 11 pm but that the dog was at home at the time of the body’s discovery.

“He had significant head injuries and unfortunately passed away before he was located,” he said.

“This man is not known to police…but we are keeping an open mind and will explore all evidence.”

Detective Sergeant Hupfeld said police were looking for witnesses with any information that could help with the investigation.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who may have been out and about last night and seen anything or heard anything suspicious between 11pm and 4am,” he said.

“People who may have been walking or driving down the street, or live in this area of Geelong, you may have CCTV or dashcam footage.”

Anyone with any information about the incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
