A “significant” rise in crime has prompted police to launch a series of operations around Geelong, the city’s top cop has revealed.

Police statistics for the year to the end of January show a 12 per cent increase in overall crime.

Commercial & General wants to build 500 students units at the corner of Brougham and Cavendish St but has shelved the project until it can determine the level of assistance that might be available.

Opponents of the proposed waste to energy facility in Lara had a win last week when state parliament’s upper house backed a community-led petition calling for the planning minister to reject the facility.

Greens member Dr Sarah Mansfield tabled the petition before the Legislative Council, on Wednesday, March 6, calling for Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny to “put people first” and “knock this project off”
