Geelong recognised as popular hunting spot

Geelong has been named one of the most popular duck and quail hunting towns, according to the Game Management Authority’s (GMA) latest harvest report.

The GMA’s Estimates of Duck and Stubble Quail Harvest in Victoria 2023 report identified Geelong as one of the state’s popular hunting and harvesting areas during this year’s game bird harvest.

The report showed an estimated that 319,900 game ducks were harvested and that out of the 21,959 licensed duck hunters, 65 per cent were actively hunted.

GMA Strategy and Research director Simon Toop said the report’s research was based on phone surveys from randomly selected licenced game bird hunters who voluntarily participated.

“The information hunters provide helps build a stronger understanding of game bird harvest trends and hunting activity in Victoria,” he said.

“Throughout 2023, approximately 2,920 licenced game bird hunters were surveyed to collect information about their hunting activity.

“This included how many game birds were harvested, where hunting occurred, hunting methods used, and the species of game birds harvested.”

The report also recognised the pacific black duck, grey teal and the Australian wood duck as the state’s three most harvested species.

The GMA produces the report annually in collaboration with the Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research.
