Five new cases but active cases fall

Geelong has recorded five new cases of COVID-19 but the city’s active cases continue to decrease.

Greater Geelong had 300 cases as of midnight yesterday compared to 295 the day before.

But active cases dropped from 172 to 167, mirroring the trend of the day before.

These figures indicate that a number of cases have either recovered, died or been reclassified.

Colac Otway Shire had 59 active cases as of midnight yesterday, down two on the previous day.

Surf Coast and Golden Plains shire’s active cases remained level on five and 11 respectively.

The department has so far linked 83 cases to an outbreak at Colac’s Australian Lamb Company abattoir and 48 to an outbreak at Golden Farms Poultry in Breakwater.

Victoria recorded 372 new COVID-19 cases with one reclassified, largely due to duplication, increasing the total by 371 to 16,234.

Another 14 Victorians have died from COVID-19, including 12 aged-care residents and a man his 20s, bringing the state’s death toll to 289.

The man in his 20s was reportedly the youngest Australian to die after contracting COVID-19 so far.

The deaths also included three women and two men in their 80s and four women and four men in their 90s.

Of the new cases 87 are linked to outbreaks or complex cases, and 285 are under investigation.

Victoria has 7877 active cases with 3119 cases from unknown transmission.

Currently 659 Victorians are in hospital after contracting COVID-19 with 41 in intensive care, while 7842 people have recovered.

Of the total cases, 14,897 are from metropolitan Melbourne, while 984 are from regional Victoria.

More than 1,914,400 tests have been processed to date.
