A staff shortage has forced police to abandon Geelong’s Neighbourhood Watch programs, according to coordinators.
They said the lack of police support would force Neighbourhood Watch to reduce its 48 Geelong branches to six or seven covering the same area.

Labor stalwart Peter Loney says he will break a lifetime practice to cast his first vote for a Liberal – mayoral candidate Darryn Lyons.
Mr Loney, formerly a Labor MP in the seats of Geelong North and its Lara replacement for 14 years until 2006, said other leading candidates carried too much “baggage”. He said certain figures were “going out of their way to attack (Mr Lyons’) credentials in an unfair way”.

The Victorian Government has baulked at welcoming Bruce Harwood as mayor after sacking him with the rest of Geelong’s council in 2016.
The Indy asked Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz whether she welcomed Cr Harwood’s appointment this week but she instead raised the spectre of state-appointed monitors overseeing his new council.

Ambulance Victoria’s latest performance data has shown the health system is under significant pressure, with ambulance call-outs for life-threatening matters increasing by more than 10 per cent across Geelong.
The performance data for the July to September quarter showed Ambulance Victoria received 3900 code one call-outs, which require a lights and sirens response, across the city.
