An elderly man has died in hospital following a two-car crash at North Geelong on Saturday afternoon.
The man was driving a blue Mitsubishi sedan that collided head-on with a blue Volkswagen Golf on Thompson Rd about 3.35pm.
An ambulance helicopter airlifted the 88-year-old North Geelong man, the sole occupant of the Mitsubishi, to Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
But the man’s condition deteriorated and he died in hospital on Sunday night, police said on Monday.
The female driver and only occupant of the Volkswagen, a 26-year-old Newtown woman, received non-life threatening injuries.
Paramedics took her to University Hospital Geelong in a serious but stable condition.
Investigators had yet to speak to the woman or determine the cause of the crash, police said.
Police continued their investigation on Monday and urged anyone who witnessed the collision or with dash cam footage to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
The death brought the road toll to 117, compared to 80 the same time last year, police said.
