Poppy sellers needed in Torquay

Volunteers are needed in Torquay to help sell red poppies before Remembrance Day in November.

Torquay Returned and Services League (RSL) is looking for more volunteers before poppies go on sale at the end of October for people to wear the symbol of remembrance.

Torquay RSL appeals officer and 52-year RSL Australia member Lyle Raison said more people were needed to sell the poppies as many previous sellers were aging and required more help.

“Torquay RSL is desperate for a few volunteers to step in and help with poppy sales at local venues in Torquay,” he said.

“Poppies go on sale from the end of October to the 10th of November…and the money raised from the sales goes towards the RSL’s Welfare Fund.”

President Bob Brackin said Remembrance Day was important to veterans and their families and that wearing a red poppy was a sign that those who were lost were not forgotten.

“The 11th of November is always a very special time for all Australians”, he said.

“It is on Remembrance Day, above all other days, that we recall the women and men who, through personal sacrifices, contributed to the evolution and identity of our country, Australia.

“We would like to see poppies worn everywhere on Remembrance Day to show that we remember the sacrifices made.

“Every dollar raised helps ex-service people and their families whenever there is a need.”

Remembrance Day 2023 will be held at Point Danger at the war memorials at 10.30am, and Torquay poppy sellers will be at their posts at each supermarket and North Torquay Bunnings.

If anyone can spare a few hours to sell red poppies between November 1 and 10, contact Torquay RSL on 0409 297 441 or email torquayrsl@gmail.com
