The Surf Coast Shire is looking to become an Eco Destination and continue its commitment to sustainability through an Ecotourism Australia program.
Ecotourism Australia is a national peak body for sustainable and nature-based tourism, with its programs globally acknowledged for its industry standards.
Surf Coast Shire councillor Kate Gazzard said the program with Ecotourism Australia would help deliver high-quality “tourism experiences within the region”.
“When people are deciding where to travel, sustainability rating is becoming a big factor influencing their travel decision,” she said.
“Getting Eco Destination Certification is a demonstration of council’s strong commitment to the ongoing improvement of sustainable practices.
“Research shows 75 per cent of travellers want to travel more sustainably and 71 per cent want to leave the places they visit better than when they arrived.”
Tourism is a crucial industry sector for the Surf Coast, with close to three million visitors generating more than $500 million in expenditure and creating 1700 jobs.
Cr Gazzard said it was important to the balance right “to ensure a positive experience for everyone”.
“Our strengths included our Climate Emergency Action Plan, and meaningful consultation with Traditional Owners,” she said.
“An initial preliminary assessment was very positive, and the program is envisaged to take 18 months to achieve certification.
“A great experience supports the environment, affirms our values, extends people’s stay and in turn benefits our businesses and creates more jobs for our community.”
Council will work closely with Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism and other stakeholders like Parks Victoria and Traditional Owners to achieve Eco Destination certification.
It will need to meet and maintain criteria under six pillars, including destination management, nature and scenery, environment and climate, culture and tradition, social wellbeing, and business sustainability and marketing.
