Musical theatre studies closer to home

Musical theatre education is coming to Geelong with a year-long course exploring the disciplines of acting, singing and dance.

The Diploma of Musical Theatre is a full-time course over three days a week that Oxygen College will launch next year in partnership with the Geelong Arts Centre.

Geelong Arts Centre chief executive and creative director Joel McGuinness said more students would have a chance to gain skills in musical theatre closer to home.

“It represents a significant investment in nurturing and empowering the next generation of performing artists right here in Geelong,” he said.

“By providing access to top-tier training and educational opportunities, we are not only cultivating artistic excellence but also fostering a sense of belonging and pride in our local talent.”

Oxygen College head of music Phil Kearney said auditions for a place in the 2025 course will begin in the middle of the year and encouraged anyone interested to apply.

“Geelong has such a wonderful history of musical theatre performance, and we couldn’t’ be more excited about offering education in this field,” he said.

“When the decision was made to deliver this course, it seemed so obvious that it would be offered in collaboration with a facility as amazing as the Geelong Arts Centre.”

The course will be supported by highly qualified and industry-engaged training staff and run out of state-of-the-art facilities at Oxygen College and Geelong Arts Centre.

Visit oxygencollege.com.au for more information about the course and to express interest in applying.
