A safe zone is being trialled along Geelong’s Little Malop Street to increase pedestrian safety.
The City of Greater Geelong Council will undertake a 12-month trial that will include the installation of rising bollards between Dennys Place and Moorabool Street.
The bollards will act to prevent vehicles from entering the area daily from 10am to 4am the following morning.
Mayor Trent Sullivan said the trial would contribute to the Council’s efforts to make the dining and entertainment precinct even more attractive by addressing safety issues.
“Geelong’s becoming known for its vibrant laneway culture and we want to continue to build on that by testing out a pedestrian safe zone that also increases the available space for events and activations,” he said.
“As the region experiences a renaissance following COVID disruptions, we are committed to encouraging and attracting more economic activity to the area.”
Vehicle access will be controlled through a keypad access code, with emergency services and residents of the area allowed 24-hour access.
The automatic bollards have also been fitted with a warning siren, light, sensor, and signage to signal to pedestrians and vehicles when in operation.
Residents and business owners can apply for access to the area and gain a code to the keypad by emailing centralgeelong@geelongcity.vic.gov.au with their name, business/property/residential address, business name and phone number.
