Exceptional Good Friday Appeal fundraising efforts

The Torquay Lions Club has made a fundraising achievement by donating more than $41,000 to the Good Friday Appeal.

The money raised by the club made up most of the total $78,677 gathered by the Torquay community to help the Royal Children’s Hospital look after sick kids.

Regional co-ordinator Peter McMahon said the club had already passed its original goal at 10am with $35,000 and had more than tripled last year’s figure by the end of the day.

“Our local community is very generous, and support from Torquay’s businesses and many individual donations ensured we well exceeded our initial target of $20,000,” he said.

“Volunteer highway collectors from Deakin University, Torquay Lions Club, with help from Grovedale Fire Brigade and various other volunteers, all helped us achieve the $41,500.”

Mr McMahon said he was proud of the achievement the club had made to help the Royal Children’s Hospital.

“Almost every family has been touched as the Children’s Hospital has helped so many youngsters,” he said.

“I thank all who supported the appeal so generously.”

Good Friday Appeal executive director Rebecca Cowan said she wanted to thank everyone who helped raise funds to allow the Royal Children’s Hospital to grow and help sick children.

“We are so thankful to the incredible communities across regional Victoria each and every year,” she said.

“Their passion and generosity never ceases to amaze us and this final tally could not have been reached without the dedicated communities across the state who have come together for the kids.”

Two local areas had made the top 10 money raised by Victorian regional and rural areas for the Good Friday Appeal. Geelong contributed $116,848, and Barwon Heads made $82,357.

Other local town achievements included Little River with $14,666 and Ocean Grove with $26,563.
