New wave of aquatic fun

Work is now underway on Surf Coast’s new Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre to bring aquatic fun to Torquay.

Recent works on the site include the completion of a new car park, with the next phase of stage one set to deliver an indoor 25-metre pool, warm water indoor pool, gymnasium, program rooms, allied health suites, cafe and supporting amenities.

Surf Coast Shire mayor Mike Bodsworth said he was “thrilled to have construction underway” on the new facility.

“The centre will bring generational health, wellbeing and water safety benefits, as well as lots of fun times, for people of all ages and abilities in our community,” he said.

Stage one of the facility has been funded through $20 million from the federal government, $16.6 million from the state government and $9.6 million from Surf Coast Shire Council.

Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said the investment helped create a “vibrant space” for families to connect and stay active.

“Together, we’re building a lasting legacy of health, fun, and community spirit for generations to enjoy,” she said.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence said the project would help transform the region’s aquatic health and recreation access.

“We’re proud to support works on a facility that will add a whole new dimension of fun to this popular Surf Coast destination,” she said.

Stage two of the facility will be funded through the state government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program to provide a dedicated swimming pool, splash park, spa, sauna, and steam room.

The new facility will also include more bench seating, storage, landscaping, change rooms and a plant room.
