Flights from Avalon to Sydney are set to take off next month after the NSW Government’s announcement last week the Victorian border will open.

The twice-daily return service beginning December 18 will be Jetstar’s first flight from Avalon in almost nine months, the airline announced on Tuesday.

“We’ve seen huge demand for flights between Victoria and New South Wales since last week’s announcement,” Jetstar chief executive officer Gareth Evans said.

“As well as providing a direct link to Sydney, the resumption of services will help boost tourism back into Victoria, with Avalon being the gateway to the state’s famous Great Ocean Road.

“We’re excited to bring back low fares to Avalon, helping to reconnect family and friends and give more people the opportunity for a holiday after what has been tough period for many.”

This will be the first time Jetstar has operated between the two destinations since March 31, and represents about 40 per cent of flights on the route compared to the same time last year.

Mr Evans said Jetstar would continue to monitor the easing of restrictions between Victoria and other states and add more flights from Avalon according to demand.

“This is an exciting milestone in rebuilding our network – providing more low fares to more people and also getting more of our team back in work.”

The first flights from Sydney to Avalon are scheduled to take off at 11.55am and 6.30pm on December 18, with the journey taking one hour and 25 minutes.

Return flights will operate from Avalon at 2pm and 8.45pm, with a slightly shorter flight time of one hour and 20 minutes.

Prices for the flights start at $71 based on payment by POLi, Jetstar vouchers, Jetstar gift cards, Jetstar credit cards, or where the total flights booking is redeemed in Qantas Points Plus Pay through jetstar.com

For other payment options, a payment fee applies.
