GeelongPort and Vestas have joined to help deliver Australia’s largest wind farm an hour’s drive from Geelong during the Golden Plains Wind Farm’s first stage.
GeelongPort chief executive officer Brett Winter said the port was thrilled to support a significant renewable project which looked to be Australia’s largest wind farm based in Rokewood, Victoria.
“GeelongPort has a long-standing relationship with Vestas, and we look forward to partnering with them again on this nation-building project,” he said.
“Through this project, we look forward to continuing to deliver environmental and economic benefits to the south-west region of Victoria as well as supporting the Victorian Government’s transition to renewable energy.”
Mr Winter said the first stage of the Golden Plains Wind Farm project was expected to generate enough clean energy to power close to 450,000 homes a year once it’s operational.
He also said Geelong Port looked to receive its first shipment of wind turbines in September this year and that the collaboration would help support Victoria’s transition to clean energy.
Vestas Australia and New Zealand senior vice president and country head Danny Nielsen said he was “pleased to partner with GeelongPort” to help deliver the Golden Plains Wind Farm.
“GeelongPort’s expertise and unique solutions make them an invaluable partner,” he said.
“Their strategic location, critical infrastructure, and extensive experience will be instrumental in helping us accomplish our goals for this vital project.”
GeelongPort will provide critical port and infrastructure for 122 Vestas EnVentus turbines at the Golden Plains Wind Farm site.
The project would also help prevent more than four million tonnes of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere each year.
The project’s first stage was expected to start producing green energy next year and be completed in the second half of 2025.
