Fire danger periods end

Fire restrictions are ending across the region in the coming fortnight as cooler weather sets in, although the Country Fire Authority (CFA) warns that risks remain on hot windy days.

The Fire Danger Period will finish at 1am on April 17 in the City of Greater Geelong, the Borough of Queenscliffe, Surf Coast Shire and Golden Plains Shire, while the Colac-Otway Shire will see restrictions lift at 1am on April 11.

CFA Acting Deputy Chief Officer South West Brendan Lawson said despite the ending of the Fire Danger Period people needed to continue to exercise extreme caution.

“All burning off must be conducted in compliance with municipal local laws,” he said.

“We’re urging everyone to stay safe, whether you’re living in or travelling to high bushfire risk areas.

“Please monitor the conditions on hot, dry and windy days, as we may still see some days of elevated fire risk.”

Acting DCO Lawson said the lifting of restrictions would see landowners take the opportunity to burn off but urged residents to check local conditions before considering any burn-offs.

“You must register your burn-offs, check weather conditions and follow local council laws and regulations,” he said.

“Registering your burn-off ensures that if smoke or fire is reported, the incident is cross- checked with our register, which prevents firefighters from unnecessarily responding.”

“When conducting burn-offs, remain alert and always have resources on hand to extinguish the fire.”

Landowners can register their burn-off online at www.firepermits.vic.gov.au or call 1800 668 511.
