Chance for youth to be part of change

Mission Australia is encouraging young people across Victoria to take part and have their say in Youth Survey 2022, which closes on August 31.

The survey, which Mission Australia says is the largest of its kind, is a chance for young people aged 15-19 to share their perspectives, experiences and concerns on a range of broad issues.

Last year over 4,600 participants took part in Youth Survey, identifying COVID-19, the environment and equity and discrimination as their primary concerns.

The results of the survey are used by governments and other organisations to guide policy making around the needs of young people.

Mission Australia CEO Sharon Callister said the survey revealed important insights to the lives and experiences of Victoria’s youth that might otherwise remain hidden.

“For more than 20 years Mission Australia’s Youth Survey has provided a critical platform for young people to communicate what is going on in their world,” she said.

“We know from last years’ results that they were heavily impacted by lockdowns and were severely affected in a range of ways including mental health, education and employment.”

Over one in 30 participants from last year’s survey reported they had experienced homelessness for the first time, a result that Mrs Callister said was completely unacceptable but also highlighted the importance of listening to what young people have to say.

“Find the nearest young person and ask them if they’ve participated,” she said.

“Every participant counts and makes a difference. Most of us know someone aged between 15 and 19, so let them know Mission Australia needs their help – the survey takes less than 15 minutes.

“Many don’t feel heard, so this is a great opportunity to have a say and be part of change. The more respondents we have, the more insightful and robust the results will be.”
