Bike ride goes local

This year’s Great Vic Bike Ride (The Ride), beginning on November 26, will travel through Anglesea and Inverleigh.

The ride, which can be done in three, five and nine days, begins in Koroit and will see around 3000 riders and 800 support people contribute to the local economy.

Organisers of the Ride, Bicycle Network, will host a community meeting for Inverleigh residents on Thursday 25 August from 6pm at Inverleigh Recreation Reserve.

The meeting will be a chance for local community groups and businesses to explore the fundraising and business opportunities, discuss how to best to maximise the ride’s visit to town and to ask any questions they may have.

Golden Plains Shire has worked closely with event organisers to bring the Ride to Golden Plains and in June, awarded Bicycle Network a $5000 Community Strengthening Grant to support the event’s overnight stay at Inverleigh on December 3. Riders will stay at Anglesea on December 2.

“It’s exciting for Golden Plains to see such an iconic bike ride travel through the shire and spend the night in Inverleigh, where riders will have the opportunity to explore and enjoy all that the town has to offer,” Golden Plains Shire Council Mayor Gavin Gamble said.

“This is a fantastic chance to showcase Golden Plains, particularly Inverleigh, and I encourage local businesses and community groups to get involved and make the most of the ride’s visit to the Shire.

“The riders will get to enjoy some of the best parts of Western Victoria including the beautiful scenery and charming towns of Golden Plains. We very much look forward to welcoming the Great Victorian Bike Ride to our shire later in the year and I, personally, look forward to cycling with them for this leg of their journey across our shire.”
