Winds shut down City sites

City sites will close across Geelong for the rest of today due to windy conditions.

Late Friday morning the City of Greater Geelong announced due to exceptionally high winds the Geelong Botanic Gardens, Drysdale Landfill and Geelong Resource Recovery Centre will be closed for the rest of today (Friday, September 8).

The City’s statement said the decision had been made in the interest of public safety and to protect members of the community.

“The safety of our community and staff is our top priority, and these measures have been taken to minimise any potential risks associated with the adverse weather conditions,” the statement read.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause and appreciate your understanding in helping us ensure the safety of all.”

The statement said residents could stay informed via the City’s social media channels.

The Victoria State Emergency Service advised residents to keep informed via VicEmergency and Bureau of Meteorology, stay away from drains, gutters, creeks and waterways and check that any loose items such as outdoor settings and umbrellas were secured.
