Surfing for everyone to enjoy

There will be smiles on dials once again when Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) returns to Ocean Grove main beach in February and March.

Ocean Grove’s DSA branch was founded in 2008 and aims to provide an inclusive experience for all people with any disability to experience the rush of riding a wave. It is one of the biggest of its kind in Australia.

With two events each year on the first Sunday of February and March, DSA Ocean Grove is putting the call out for volunteers to assist in and out of the water to ensure the smooth and safe running of the event.

“We had very successful events previously and are looking to build on that,” president Jeremy Swift said.

“Without our wonderful volunteers we would not be able to hold our events. The days are super special to us all and such an amazing feeling being able to help others enjoy the stoke of surfing and catch a few waves.

“Putting smiles on dials is what we are all about and we need as many people as possible to help make our events happen.”

The events attract about 80 participants and hundreds of volunteers.

Volunteers don’t have to get into the water. There are many positions to fill, including assisting people in chairs down to the beach and back, escorting surfers down to the beach and running water to them.

The first of the surf events is on Sunday February 1 with the second on Sunday March 1.
