A new recycling site has begun operations in North Geelong to service the community until the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre (GRRC) redevelopment is completed.
The site, located at 21 Slevin Street, has been established in partnership by the City of Greater Geelong and GDP Industries, the local social enterprise and charity that manages GRRC.
The original GRRC site in Douro Street, which was closed in March this year due to safety concerns with the structure, will be demolished and rebuilt.
The interim facility is smaller and is unable to take the complete range of waste materials accepted by other resource recovery centres around the region.
The Slevin Street site is open daily from 8am to 4.15pm. It is available for Greater Geelong residents only, and cannot accept commercial quantities.
Environment and Circular Economy portfolio chair Councillor Elise Wilkinson thanked the community for their “patience and understanding” while the interim site was being established.
“This service will be a helpful option for residents until the main recycling centre at Douro Street is rebuilt,” she said.
Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj said the interim site would “help maintain vital recycling services” for the community.
“While we work towards a new and improved resource recovery centre, this temporary facility will make sure residents can continue recycling key items safely and responsibly,” he said.
