Hundreds of new homes are being fast tracked for Geelong to provide people with more choice about how and where they want to live.
Two new housing projects at Geelong’s Malop Street and across Geelong West’s Hope and Autumn Streets were given the green light to begin development by the state government, which will provide 270 new homes for the region.
Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny said the projects were fast-tracked through the state government’s Development Facilitation Program.
“We know the only way to make housing fairer for young Victorians is to build more homes, faster, and that’s why we’re fast-tracking projects just like these ones in Geelong,” she said.
The Malop Street 16-storey development will provide 214 new homes, while two four-storey buildings at Hope and Autumn Streets will also provide 56 new dwellings.
Member for Geelong Christine Couzens said the new homes, ranging from studio to three bedrooms, were located close to essential services.
“These projects will deliver hundreds of new homes in the heart of Geelong, right where people want to live and close to great public transport, jobs and services,” she said.
More than 5000 homes have been fast-tracked through the Development Facilitation Program since it opened to residential development two years ago.
The program streamlines the planning process for priority projects that boost investment into the economy, keep people in jobs and create homes across the state.
