Helping over-55s get involved

People aged 55 and older across the Surf Coast now have access to a new directory to help them lead more connected, active and inclusive lifestyles.

Surf Coast Shire’s new Get Involved booklet, available both in print and online, is a comprehensive guide to local clubs, groups, activities and services.

The directory includes addresses, contact details and website links to more than 100 organisations of all sorts.

Councillor Tony Phelps said the shire was “delighted” to be launching a new edition of the guide, which it first produced in 2021.

“The guide effectively opens doors to the many wonderful groups, activities and services available to help older adults across our shire age well, and in doing that aims to build social connections and promote health and wellbeing,” Cr Phelps said.

“We encourage older adults to pick the booklet up from one of our many distribution points, or check the directory out online, find some inspiration and make new connections.

“The guide includes contacts and locations for more than 80 community-based clubs, groups and activities, and more than 20 services and agencies providing support in areas including food relief, housing and accommodation, financial hardship, and mental health and drug and alcohol services.”

Though the Get Involved booklet officially launches in October during Positive Ageing Month, it is available online at surfcoast.vic.gov.au/GetInvolved and in hard copy at a number of outlets across the shire, including the shire’s civic office in Torquay, community houses, Wurdi Baierr Stadium, Kurrambee Myaring Community Centre, Winchelsea Health Club, aged care residential facilities and GP clinics and health centres.
