Despite enduring their busiest six-month period on record, Geelong paramedics have managed to start reducing ambulance response times for the first time since the July-September quarter of 2020.

Demand for ambulance services in the Greater Geelong local government area (LGA) has soared since the beginning of the pandemic, increasing nearly 40 per cent since the first half of 2020.

The refusal comes as Labor moves to protect the seat of Geelong, where the school is located, against an election challenge from high-profile ex-mayor Darryn Lyons.

Geelong pensioners will bear the brunt of electricity price rises when one Victoria’s largest power plants closes next year, according to senior citizens branches.

Australian consulting firm Frontier Economics forecast a 25 per cent price increase after Hazelwood closes in March.
