Geelong shines rainbow

Community members will be able to celebrate all the colours of the rainbow in a safe and fun-filled space during the Geelong Rainbow Festival.

Johnstone Park will host live performances, community services, group stalls, food trucks and activities during the free festival aimed at celebrating the diversity and uniqueness of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Geelong Rainbow president and trans-woman Audrey Stringer said the festival would provide a colourful celebration for the queer community and its allies.

“We just want to provide a really safe space for our beautiful community to come and have a great time,” she said.

“There’s something for adults and kids, including lots of bubbles, face painting and glitter, which will be amazing.

“It’s insanely crucial to have these events, especially in Geelong, because we have a lot of people here…and we just want to show love, kindness and respect for our community.”

Ms Stringer said she got a lot of joy from seeing people coming together for a fun day of connection and pride.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all the queer joy happening around the region while experiencing it for myself as well,” she said.

“It’s really nice to have gender diverse people that are willing to perform in front of the general public, which is just amazing to see.”

The festival will begin on Friday 6 February with a Pride Launch Party, followed by a Pride Rally and the Geelong Rainbow Festival on Saturday 7 February, before concluding with a Vic Pride Street Party on Sunday 8 February.
