Last days for floating tree

Time is running out if you haven’t yet seen Geelong’s floating Christmas tree.

There is less than a week left to check out the 25-metre-tall tree at Steampacket Quay before it is taken back into storage.

The Sound and Light Shows on the 10-tonne tree continue each night this week every 15 minutes from 8.30pm to midnight until Sunday 8 January. The display lasts for six minutes.

Community members who celebrate Orthodox Christmas on Saturday 7 January will be able to share in the magic of the iconic tree.

The four-metre-wide tree is covered in 400 LED lights and 25,000 reflective discs, and gently rotates with the wind direction.

Local company Total Events spent a week decorating the tree and developed three captivating sound and light shows for the community to enjoy, with the third and final show on this week.

Mayor Trent Sullivan encouraged community members to make their way down to Steampacket Quay this week to get one last show in.

“The tree was constructed by Geelong manufacturer Hanlon Industries in 2014 and has been a favourite for locals and visitors since,” Mayor Sullivan said.

“The Floating Christmas Tree is a source of joy for community members of all ages and has attracted thousands of people to Steampacket Quay and central Geelong since its launch in November last year.”

Council hosted more than 30 events and activities at over 80 locations this season.

The City is seeking feedback on its 2022 Christmas in Geelong program at yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au/CIG2022.

By filling out the survey, community members could go in the draw to win one of three $100 gift cards. The survey is open until 5pm on Friday 13 January.
