The most promising HIV vaccine in the world, developed at Geelong’s Australian Animal Health Laboratory, is set for clinical trials on humans. But animal rights groups yesterday protested at the CSIRO facility on Portarlington Rd, East Geelong, against the use of monkeys in HIV vaccine research.

A Geelong demolition company director must pay more than $70,000 in fines for dumping and abandoning 15 tonnes of asbestos in Moolap, a magistrate has ruled. But Geelong Magistrates’ Court heard taxpayers would foot the clean-up bill of almost $2 million because McCormack Demolitions had gone bust.

A veteran policeman, who thought he would die after being repeatedly stabbed by an ice-crazed driver on the highway at Batesford, has been awarded the Victoria Police Star. Senior Sergeant David Reither, who was transferring from Geelong to Ballarat at the time, said the award, one of the highest in the force, closed another chapter in a career of more than 27 years.
