Veterans and first responders are ‘Never Alone’

Torquay Returned and Services League (RSL) is helping deliver the key message to veterans, first responders, and their families that they are ‘Never Alone’.

The ‘You Are Never Alone’ seminar and afternoon tea will take place at the Veterans’ Advocacy Centre, behind the Torquay Bowls Club, on October 9 from 1.30pm for mental health awareness.

Advocacy and welfare co-ordinator Phil Pickering said the event would address the effect of mental illness on the individual and their families.

“Mental health treatment has changed and improved radically over the last few years,” he said.

“It’s okay to break your ankle. It’s also okay to get PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). It’s just a normal unfortunate thing we’re experiencing more.

“We’re holding a seminar to address these issues for veterans with the help of many mental health specialists to help them recognise whether they have a mental health problem.”

Mr Pickering said the afternoon would feature talks from the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club, a PTSD specialist, and a pet therapy company.

“All veterans and their partners or family are very welcome to come,” he said.

“Come along, chat and listen to the experts on mental health, and we’ll make you as welcome as possible.

“We’re trying to not make it too long or too intense. I think many will find it very interesting, rewarding and informative. There is also an afternoon tea.”

To register or for more information on the ‘You Are Never Alone’ seminar on Monday, October 9, at 1.30pm at 47 The Esplanade in Torquay, email wellbeingtorquayrsl@gmail.com
