A kangaroo shot twice with a crossbow west of Geelong has been euthanised due to its severe injuries, with wildlife authorities hunting its “cruel” killer.
A wildlife rescuer discovered the injured eastern grey kangaroo at Wurdiboluc Reservoir, near Winchelsea, on Saturday August 29.
Two crossbow bolts were protruding from the animal’s body and the kangaroo was euthanised due to its severe injuries.
The kangaroo had suffered severe pain and distress before being put down, according to Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning regional operations manager Glenn Sharp.
“The arrows that were removed from this kangaroo were designed for shooting at targets, not killing animals,” he said.
“As such, this attack led to inhumane suffering before the kangaroo was put down.
“Harming wildlife is not only illegal – it is cruel. That’s why there are significant penalties, with offenders potentially facing substantial fines and time in prison.”
Kangaroos are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975, and those who illegally hunt, take or kill protected wildlife face fines of up to $8261 and up to six months’ prison.
The Conservation Regulator is now investigating the incident and Mr Sharp urged anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
“Even a small amount of information may lead to a significant outcome,” he said.
