No Geelong cases in nearly a fortnight, as Victoria records meatworks spike

Geelong has recorded no new coronavirus cases for 13 days, just one short of the average 14-day recovery period for mild cases.

Confirmed greater Geelong coronavirus cases have remained on 63 since midnight on April 21, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The last Geelong case prior to that was diagnosed on April 13.

Surf Coast cases have remained on 10 since April 10.

Last week Barwon Health was unable to confirm the exact number of recovered cases in Geelong as not all had been reported through the organisation.

But Barwon Health communications director Kate Bibby said the number of active cases in the region was “likely to be very low … no more than one or two.”

But she also warned Geelong could have other asymptomatic or otherwise undiagnosed cases.

The local result comes as Victorian cases rose by 22 to 1406, including 19 new cases linked to Cedar Meats processing facility in Brooklyn.

There are 34 cases linked to the meatworks, including the 19 confirmed on Sunday.

Authorities refused to name the plant, saying there was no risk to public health, but the facility’s general manager Tony Kairouz today issued a statement confirming a number of employees had tested positive.

Another two new cases included returned travellers currently in hotel quarantine, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

“Today’s increase in cases illustrates once again that while we have been flattening the curve, our battle against COVID-19 is far from over,” said Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton.

“Victorians have done a remarkable job so far sticking to the coronavirus restrictions and staying at home has saved lives. But now is not the time for complacency.”

The 1406 cases state-wide included 735 males and 671 females, with cases ranging from infants to people in their 90s.

Eighteen Victorians, aged from their 50s to 90s, have died after contracting coronavirus.

In Victoria, 143 confirmed cases may have been acquired through community transmission with more than 146,500 tests conducted to date, according to the department.

Currently, 11 people are in hospital, including six patients in intensive care, and 1310 people have recovered.

Of the 1406 cases, 1150 occurred in metropolitan Melbourne and 218 in regional Victoria. Several cases remain under investigation.

Meanwhile police fined 44 people yesterday for breaching COVID-19 restrictions while conducting 879 spot checks at Victorian homes, businesses and non-essential services.
