Long awaited road upgrades set to start

Work will soon begin to upgrade Ghazeepore Road in Waurn Ponds after years of community advocacy.

The upgrades, which will include indented parking bays, pedestrian crossing points, intersection upgrades and bus stop enhancements, are expected to start in June.

A new roundabout at Monterey Drive will be funded by $313,000 from the Victorian government’s Safe Local Roads and Streets program, while Hams Road developers and the City of Greater Geelong will fund the other upgrades.

Between 2015 and 2020, traffic volume along the section of road doubled due to the influx of new homes in Armstrong Creek and Mount Duneed, leading to complaints from residents over pedestrian safety and damage to parked vehicles.

The new upgrades intend to improve traffic flow, turning movements and pedestrian safety when accessing bus stops.

Deputy Mayor Ron Nelson said the project was about making Ghazeepore Road safer for everyone.

“We’re focused on delivering improvements that reduce congestion, enhance safety and support the growing Waurn Ponds community,” Deputy Mayor Nelson said.

Deakin Ward councillor Andrew Katos said the upgrades were the result of years of community input.

“With support from both the state government and local developers, we’re turning community feedback into real improvements,” Cr Katos said.
