Jan Juc, Bells Beach, and Bellbrae community members are calling for more wildlife signage across the Surf Coast Shire.
Council received the ‘Extra Kangaroo and Wildlife Signage – Multiple Locations Within Surf Coast Shire’ petition during its September 23 meeting.
The petition called for extra wildlife signage on Duffields Road, The Great Ocean Road, Bells Boulevard, Bones Road, Jarosite Road, Addiscott Road, and the surrounding areas.
Councillor Adrian Schonfelder said the petition identified the importance of addressing road accidents with wildlife in certain areas, which was a growing concern.
Mr Schonfelder said there had been an increase in wildlife due to natural migratory patterns being disrupted by the expanse of urban development, along with traffic, noise, and light pollution.
“It breaks my heart… as they (wildlife) have a right to exist, and I really feel that this petition is extremely important,” he said.
“It’s a very serious issue with the wildlife that’s been decimated, particularly by motorists, and I understand that in most cases it’s by accident.
“On Facebook and online, I see lots of cases of kangaroos (getting hit and killed), and the joeys are left still alive in their pouches, and it’s becoming more of an issue that needs addressing.”
A report on the petition will be presented to council at a future meeting within three months following the September meeting.
