Local community-led projects will share in more than $1.25 million of community infrastructure grants from the City of Greater Geelong.
The 18 successful applicants will receive up to $50,000 for planning projects of up to $250,000 for capital works that increase access to places, spaces and services where they are needed most.
They include open spaces, recreation and sports facilities, arts and cultural venues, community centres, early years facilities and meeting places.
Capital grants recipients include the Geelong Pool Club, which will use a $250,000 grant to extend its club room, while the Festival of Glass will receive $242,000 for the Flamework Glass Blowing Facility.
Geelong BMX Club will receive planning project funding of $13,492 for a concept design proposal for pavilion architecture and Barwon Heads Arts Council will get $14,170 for infrastructure to activate the Barwon Heads Arts & Community Hub Maker Shed.
Mayor Stretch Kontelj said the grants would improve community facilities.
“Community facilities play an important role in supporting connection, health and wellbeing,” he said.
“We’re committed to making sure every part of Greater Geelong has access to quality community facilities. These projects will help us deliver on that goal.”
Councillor Andrew Katos, chair of the City’s finance portfolio, said the investment would bring ideas to life.
“This funding helps groups deliver improvements that would otherwise be out of reach,” he said.
“It’s a smart investment in facilities that serve thousands of residents across Greater Geelong.”
