The cost of climate change will hit Geelong region households harder than almost anywhere else in Australia, according to a new report.

The State of the Regions Report said climate change would strip an average $3650 a year from local household budgets, equivalent to six per cent of disposable income.

New documents about Alcoa of Australia’s operations suggest its Point Henry smelter will close next year, according to the Greens.

Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber said the documents showed Alcoa generated last financial year’s $100 million profit solely from a State Government power subsidy, due to end in seven months.

Geelong council endorsed draft master plans for community consultation for two of the city’s most important areas at this week’s council meeting, though not without dissent.

Desperate to revive the long-ailing Market Square Quarter, which councillors referred to more than once as the “heart of Geelong”, the area’s draft master plan sets out an “ambitious but considered vision” for the transformation of the area to “stimulate tenant demand and visitor interest”.
