With spring having well and truly sprung, garden lovers are spoilt for choice this weekend.
The Portarlington Garden Club will open 15 private gardens to the public from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 2 November, featuring a wide range of styles, plantings and design choices.
From a historic property established in 1875 with trees listed on the Victorian Register of Significant Trees to a 6-month-old garden designed by landscape architect Christian Jenkins, the Portarlington Garden Trail will have something for all garden enthusiasts.
Organising committee member Annette Lewis said the day was a great opportunity for people in the region to meet the gardeners, hear about their ideas and learn how they make garden spaces work.
“Just looking at other people’s gardens, seeing what they do and how they do it, getting ideas from them, it’s amazing,” she said.
“You see things and think, oh, I could do something like that. One of our gardeners grafts natives, so he’s got the most unusual native plants from Western Australia that normally wouldn’t grow here.
“We’ve tried to get all different sorts of gardens, but just about all of them have got a vegetable patch and fruit trees and how you protect your food crops is always of interest.”
Ms Lewis said the owners of the featured gardens all loved the idea of sharing what they had created and being generous with information.
“They really get a buzz out of talking to other people, and they’ve all taken (the Garden Trail) on as a project,” she said.
