Police in warning on spate of thefts

Alex de Vos
Torquay police have urged residents to secure their homes after a spate of thefts.
Senior detective Rod Hill said police were investigating two burglaries on October 22, in which thieves robbed homes of more than $5000 worth of goods.
Det Hill believed a group of teenagers was responsible for the thefts.
“A lady returned to her home in Bristol Road after shopping that morning to find a male teenager in her bedroom,” Det Hills said.
“She was able to retrieve a camera from his hand but he made off with a small amount of cash.
“Later that day an apartment in Gilbert Street was ransacked.”
Det Hills said the thieves stole a digital camera, a laptop computer, sunglasses and surfwear with the haul valued at $5000.
“We’re looking for two male teenagers and one female, who were wearing hooded windcheaters at the time,” he said.
Earlier this week police charged a man for stealing an LCD television worth $2000 from a Torquay house.
Det Hill said the man appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody.
“The warmer weather brings an influx of visitors to the region and people need to ensure their houses are well secured,” he said.
“We also encourage people to lock their cars when they go to the beach and to keep valuables out of sight.”
Det Hill asked anyone with information about the thefts to contact Torquay police.
